There are times when you may want to buy second-hand books in Hyderabad. Not just for the discounted rates, but also in expectation of serendipity. Who knows? You may end up finding a classic that you were always looking for.

Sunday book market at Koti is the perfect place for such a discovery. On Sunday, the pavements here are filled with book sellers and their books. All other commercial activity (read: shops are closed) give way to the pleasure of reading and book trading.

Nearly 50 book vendors experiment their providence on this holiday. Besides, what’s good is that in spite of being roadside shopping, the experience does not leave you dissatisfied. Simply because, it is devoid of clutter and allows you to breathe easy.

Look for…

At the Sunday book market, opportunities are on your side when it comes to looking for books that may not be easily available elsewhere. This includes novels, academic related, cookery books, comics etc. Even foreign language books are available here. But what makes this market special is its focus on literature books. So if that is what interests you, make your way to Koti on Sundays.

Bag a deal…

Books are priced here at fairly attractive rates. You may even get 80% discount on some of the finest books. From outside, some books may look worn, but most of them have their stuff well-maintained. You even have the opportunity to sell your old, unwanted books here. You can trade that off for a book you wish to buy. There may be times, when you may get a certain book for a mere Rs. 5!

Our Tips…

·        You can visit it anytime between 10.30 AM and 5 PM and only on Sundays.

·        Parking is not a problem.

·        Don’t judge books by the cover. And we mean it in the literal sense. Scrutinize every book carefully to ensure that the insides are not torn.

·        If you are searching for any book, give the name of the book to the seller. He might be able to get it for you in the subsequent week.

·        If you are not satisfied with the price, try to look in other stalls.

·        Once you enter the market, be patient enough to search through the books. This is not for rush hours.

·        If you want to sell your old books and get a good deal, don’t say yes to the first vendor. Check out what you are being offered from other vendors and settle for the best price.

So check out the Hyderabad book market and let us know your experience.

Formats of Audio Books

The most common query my website receives is: "What does unabridged audio book mean?" So I thought that it would be useful in this article to outline the different formats of audio books currently available.

Unabridged audio book. An unabridged audio book is one read / performed as the author wrote it - the whole book read from cover to cover.
Abridged audio book. An abridged audio book is one where sections have been cut out so that the focus is much more on the action. A "reader's digest if you like.

Which is best? Now that is a tricky one to answer. For me, it is unabridged every time, but in an audio book forum recently there was one of many discussions on this that made some valid points for both. My argument is that often in the UK audio books are so heavily abridged that the book is ruined. Typical examples are Colin Dexter audios & Peter Robinson audios. They will go from 12 hours unabridged to 3 hours abridged. When driving & listening, 5 seconds of lost concentration on the audio whilst changing lanes & the plot can be lost totally.

The other point for me is that great works of literature should not be destroyed to produce a commercially viable audio book. Wuthering Heights in 5 hours? Where are the moorland descriptions? Where is the complexity of character?

There is of course a counter argument. One was from a Sunday Times journalist that was slightly tongue in cheek and ran along the lines of - "if you had to listen to the junk I have to, you would praise abridgers for the pain they save me".

One customer of ours asked, "have ever listened to an unabridged Tom Clancy?".

The other argument put forward was that some readers of the abridged versions are so good that they would choose the abridged version every time. The example quoted was Tony Robinson reading Terry Pratchett. I'm not persuaded by that one, because if Tony Robinson read the unabridged version, the listener would prefer the unabridged version.

Online book shops are the first big success story of Internet shopping. The mighty US online bookshop Amazon.com has transformed from a precocious start-up to a multi-million dollar operation within a couple of years and there has been no shortage of other companies out to emulate Amazon’s selling success.

This means that bibliophile shoppers are spoilt for choice when it comes to buying books online. Virtually every book in print, is available on the Net and usually at a discount to boot. True, you can’t browse the shelves and fondle the books’ dust covers if you order online, but at least you can actually buy the book you want rather than trudging down to the high street and searching fruitlessly for your desired title, only to be told by some witless assistant that the book can be ordered but it’ll take eight weeks to arrive. If you’re lucky.

Little wonder, then, that online bookstores have become so popular. People in far-flung places can get the titles they want delivered straight to their door, book fans can order the new novel by their favorite author from overseas rather than waiting for it to be published in their own country. Most of all, the ordering online is quick, easy and can even save you a few bucks. Post usually costs a couple of dollars for the first book, and then decreases with each additional title ordered, so it makes sense to buy several books together. Because more titles are discounted to begin with, however, you still don’t lose out on the price.

All Internet bookstores follow the same basic principle of being essentially a huge database of books. You search for the author, title or subject you are interested in and the site displays the matches it can find. Select a title and, if you like it, add the book to your shopping basket. You can then either browse for more titles or click through to the checkout. Simply confirm the books you’ve decided to buy, type in your credit card details so that once you’ve bought one book, it remembers your details automatically the next time you return, saving you the trouble of typing them in again.

What makes some Internet bookstores excel, while others just exhale wheezily, is the care they take in describing individual books to their customers. Let’s face it, a database is a pretty soulless thing and if you’re presented with just a book title, author name and ISBN number, like Kalahari.net, it’s not exactly going to inspire you to buy the book, is it?

The best online bookstores understand this and so include reviews of titles by both periodicals and readers. You can post a review of the book yourself if you up to it and feeling creative. You’ll often find a book which has been critically mauled by reader reviews and most bookshops, to their credit, don’t doctor or sensor such opinions.

Some stores also feature interviews with authors, which is a great idea, but they vary widely in quality, ranging from mildly interesting to blatant promotion. The front page of most booksellers’ sites will always highlight recent bestsellers or hotly tipped new literary hopes.

The other neat touch you’ll see is the inclusion of a picture of the book’s cover, because rightly or wrongly, people do indeed judge books by their covers. Of course, with literally hundreds of thousands of books in every online bookseller’s catalogue, they can’t be expected to supply reviews, features or pictures for every single title, but those stores which make the effort are surprisingly comprehensive.

Not all online booksellers are equal. But when an Internet bookseller has got its act together, it’s a pleasure to peruse and purchase from its site.

Karen Russell’s arresting first novel entitled St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves has received rave reviews from the likes of People Magazine and The New York Post, and for good reason. Each tale in this darkly surreal collection transports the reader to the murky heat of the Florida Everglades and continues to haunt them even after moving on to the next story.

Creepy, fantastical and sparkling with whimsy, each story shares a small connection with the rest but still seems light years away from the idea of real life. In Girls Raised by Wolves, young women are romanced by spirits (Ava Wrestles the Alligator), spectral diving goggles make ghost-watching a viable hobby (Haunting Olivia) and narcoleptic children go to sleep-away camp with ones who relive historical disasters in their dreams (Z.Z.’s Sleep-Away Camp for Disordered Dreamers).

As the fables unfold, Russell establishes a thick, otherworldly haze that doesn’t lift - even between stories. An adults-only blizzard-themed skating party goes terribly wrong when the children come in search of their parents and unintentionally release the ice skating apes from their enclosures (Lady Yeti and the Palace of Artificial Snows). A little girl disappears with the tide while riding a crab shell (Haunting Olivia). A retirement community whose residents live in discarded ships must befriend teenage criminals (Out to Sea), and a young girl abandons her school trip in favor of getting trapped in a giant conch shell (The City of Shells).

Each story is stands alone in magnificence; together, they form an anthology of modern-day mythology fit for every cynical fairy tale lover.

Discount Book Clubs: Basic Facts

A book club is a commercial (usually mail order) enterprise through which selected books are sold directly to the public at a price significantly below the recommended retail price in return for a commitment to buy a particular number of books over an agreed period of time.

There are two basic types of book clubs: commitment book clubs and continuity book clubs.

Commitment book clubs feature attractive introductory offers containing several books for a symbolic price (for example 6 books for 99¢ or 4 books for 1$ each) in exchange for a commitment to buy a few more books at the regular club price within a certain timeframe; usually this means 2-4 books within a year or two. The club price incorporates a considerable discount, which can be anywhere from 30-80%, in some cases even more.

Commitment book clubs send their members a printed catalog every 3-4 weeks, along with a card which includes the title of the Featured Selection -- a book chosen by the club's editors as a must-read of the moment. Members are not bound to buy the Selection though; they can opt for a different book (or several books) instead, or decline the offer altogether, either by sending the card back or responding on the club's official web site.

Once the obligation is fulfilled, the membership can be canceled at any time. Typical representatives of commitment book clubs are Doubleday Book Club, The Literary Guild, Book-of-the-Month Club etc.

Continuity book clubs are subscription based operations in which members receive a pre-selected book or several books each month -- usually from a specific genre or a part of a series -- until the membership expires or is canceled. To prospective members a certain number of free books are often offered at the beginning to sweeten the deal or entice them to join.

Typical representatives of continuity book clubs are Harlequin (romance), Highlights (children's and educational) and Scholastic (children's and educational).

In choosing a suitable book club you should heed your preferences. Being a member of a commitment book club is, to an extent, like shopping at an online retailer. The selection is similar: you can choose from a wide range of latest bestsellers from all genres and among all the popular authors such as John Grisham, Nora Roberts, Danielle Steel, Stephen King etc. You do receive recommended reads on a regular basis, but can decline them and make your own choices. Compared to online retailers, there is an annoyance of dealing with monthly selections, but in return you save more money.

Continuity book clubs don't let you choose books yourself; instead, you will be shipped a themed book or several books each month, in tune with the specific club's offering. For example, if you're into romance books you can opt to receive romantic suspense books, historical romances, medical romances etc. These types of clubs work best for avid readers who enjoy books from a particular genre, and for people who lack the time or desire to shop for new titles on a regular basis. The shipments will often be composed of books that are not available elsewhere, so exclusivity is also part of the appeal.

Often, prospective book club members regard introductory offers such as 6 books for 99¢ with a suspicious eye; they just seem too good to be true. To an extent, they are: when shipping and handling costs are added, the deal loses some of its splendor. Nevertheless, getting five or six or seven hardcover bestsellers for $3 or $4 apiece is still a bargain that even the largest online book retailers can't come close to matching, so the question poses itself: how can book clubs afford to do it?

Several reasons. First, book clubs market the goods directly to you, the customer; by avoiding the middle man they are able to save a considerable amount. Furthermore, they cut their own deals with publishers, in order to pay smaller royalties etc. Finally, book clubs often print their own editions at at their own facilities, which lowers the production costs further.

These book club editions are identical to regular editions in terms of content and artwork: same words, same covers. However, they can be altered in size or printed on less expensive paper to achieve additional savings. They may also have a "book club edition" mark on the inside flap. Such editions are generally considered to have a lower resale value. If this represents a concern for you, note that all book clubs offer some sort of guarantee on their products and services. Continuity book clubs will usually send you a couple of free books to evaluate and decide whether or not you want to continue the relationship. Commitment book clubs will ship you the entire introductory offer (up to 8 books, which you can opt to pay for later) and give you 20 days to decide whether you want to keep them. In other words, you are not required to spend a single cent before you have a chance to check the merchandise and make sure it's up to your standards.

The Saatchi Art Gallery caters to artists of all kinds, and evidence of this exists in its commitment to the work of street artists. The gallery accepts work from a wide range of non-traditional artists, such as tattoo and graffiti artists, mural painters, performers, and others who discover unknown or unrecognized pieces. Saatchi allows these artists to upload their work in the form of photos or even videos—any or all the methods that capture the true essence of the meaning and conceptualization they would like to convey. The use of the video-upload feature is particularly convenient for performing artists, who are also encouraged to promote their work on the Saatchi Gallery Site. This features is open even to street dancers, many of whom the gallery recognises as having attained a remarkable level of proficiency at their art despite the lack of formal training.

Artists ready to upload are encouraged to register on the site for a free membership, which gives them all the privileges that Saatchi members worldwide possess. However, those who prefer to are also allowed to register as visitors and still gain the benefit of having their works displayed on the international artistic website. When art files are uploaded, visitors to the site are able not only to view the works, but also to select their ten favourites, which are ultimately showcased in a special area on the site. The exposure that this Saatchi Gallery facility affords to young street artists is immeasurable, as the gallery makes these works available to millions of viewers around the world. This considerably broadens the artistic scope of these street artists and ultimately brightens their prospects.

Philip Spires

Mario Vargas Llosa, novelist, Peruvian, is a word painter, an artist of consummate skill, capable of simultaneous intimate ecstasy and detached observation, skill that constantly surprises, titillates and intensifies. Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter is a novel that details how an eighteen year old writer of hack news stories develops relationships with his aunt and, yes, a scriptwriter, both of whom happen to be Bolivian. Auth Julia is an aunt by definable and identifiable, but non-bloodline association. At least there is still some decency! She is a divorcee, not a Peruvian – what would you expect, then? - and attractive to boot. She is also conquerable. She is a passionate older woman – old enough to be his mother! – who succumbs to the young man’s ardent if naive charms a little too easily for her own good or, it must be said, for the keeping of face in an interested, gossiping community.

Pedro Camacho is a stunted, bald, pocket battleship of a radio scriptwriter. He is also Bolivian – an epidemic? – and specialises in sitcoms, melees of melange, several of which he can keep on the boil at the same time. He is employed by our young hero’s radio station to sex-up the regular offerings, to enliven their action with his peculiar brand of obsessive work ethic, an approach that is occasionally method-school in its execution. So when his character needs an operation, he will sit at his ancient typewriter dressed as a surgeon. He is a great success, even when his lateral thinking approach to plot is fully realised, a trait that develops into a need to introduce characters from one soap opera into another almost at random – certainly at random! – in order to test – or not! – the listeners´collaboration of listening habit and attentiveness at the same time. And thus Dirty Den arrives unnoticed in Coronation Street, armed with his original identity and a plot that no-one registers.

Our hero inhabits a shack on the roof of Radio Panamericana, where he and an accomplice in an ill-equipped office change the occasional word in other people’s reports to create broadcastable news, pieces that often serve for days because the operatives cannot be bothered to write anything new. This spirit of professionalism is host to Pedro Camacho, who claims he invented such treatment of fact in order to create soap operas. Meanwhile, our hero seduces his aunt. He is eighteen. She is in her thirties.

And interspersed with romance and radio, sex and sitcom, we have stories from Peru, surreal snippets of lives that get unnaturally intertwined, where Camacho-like characters cross over from one story to another only because they interact. (Is there another way?) Reality is always present, but it can never be trusted to be real enough, for the real thing often approaches from behind and raps us on the head when we least expect it. And so for our hero and Aunt Julia. When confronted with a reality that stands between them and their desires, they relocate, invent a new reality that suits them and thus live in it. For a while, at least, before someone else’s reality reinvents them again.

Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter is a highly complex, surreal pastiche, a masterpiece from a word painter whose virtuoso imagination sometimes generates just too much colour and surprise, thus amplifying the unreal into fantasy, thus shifting a moving reality into irreverent fairy tale. Overall, Mario Vargas Llosa stops just on the right side of this boundary, making Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter a true joy to read, a book whose process is always going to be more significant, more interesting than its product. It’s a book to enjoy impressionistically. Where it goes is where it takes you. The reader hitches the ride. The journey is the end.

What you see – Located in the busy and bustling Abids, right next to Santosh/Sapna cinema hall, the shop AA Hussain carries a piece of Hyderabad’s history with it. The structure of the store reminds us of the days of yore. After all, it has been around snce 1929.

The entrance is cramped with books placed in stacks all around. The presence of the towers of books is a little intimidating but the collection is mind-boggling. The founder, Riazath Hussain, was a philatelist and had started it as children’s bookstore. The store is now managed by his family.

Hussain's has seen many expansions since its inception. There is a ground floor extension that has a large collection of greeting cards and a first floor that has a dedicated children’s section (this was the only place where you would find Archie comics long before other bookstores came up in Hyderabad). The store is located in between many old schools of Hyderabad and that is where their loyal audience comes from.

What you get – The store looks quite cluttered and does not have much circulation space that could allow you to browse through the titles leisurely. In fact, not more than ten people can stand here at a time.

So you have to request somebody to hand you over the titles that seem interesting to you. The staff is quite efficient and will find the required books quite swiftly. The request can be of any genre and the books will be presented within minutes.

On the other hand, if you have a specific title in mind the sales people are glad to get it out for you. This is actually one of the best places to go to if you have a specific title or genre in mind. Even if it is not available, the store will try and source it for you.

The store keeps large shelves of Indian authors, religious books, self-development books, health and fitness, literature and reference books. Once you get more familiar with the store, you are bound to find some unusual books that are tucked into some remote corner and possibly a decent discount on the titles. The store also has an interesting collection of books and reference material related to films and sport.

Our verdict – A A Hussain is the best place to find the books you need. The collection is vast and expansive and covers almost all areas of interest especially fiction. Most of the customers never leave the store disappointed and therefore tend to become repeat buyers. Do ask at the front desk for an informal yet interesting review of the latest books apart from the store’s recommendations. There is designated municipal parking space available in plenty on the opposite side of the road.

Secret Passage

The Pink Forest:

A Tell-All Book of a Woman’s Secrets

It’s not everyday that you pick up a book of an author’s intimate confessions.

~ Dana Dorfman

Los Angeles, CA – "Holding a magnifying glass up to my fantasies, I see the woman I truly am," says Dorfman blushing slightly.

Dubbed a semi-autobiographical read, The Pink Forest: A Woman’s Intimate Confessions (Banderae Publishing, $14.95, ISBN: 978-0-9798592-0-5) by Dana Dorfman quickly moves the reader off Fiction Street and into the writer’s evolution. The struggle of an author trying to come out of her pages is apparent in this feeling based book. Far from a sexual confessional, the author implores readers to unfasten their emotional seatbelts as her story explodes the myth that our conscience has the last word.

The bulk of this plot takes the reader to different realities. Set in the backdrop of Oscar Season, a studio executive’s assistant opts to leave the whirl of dress fittings and crooked bow ties to seek passion. Her unique quest paints a silken figure who wants to bring life to her lips. The poor red carpet timing of her excursion creates a hyper sleep state in the reader as the cynical human psyche awakens.

The engaging view of a woman stepping out of her 9 to 5 self is captivating. Her graceful acknowledgment of being a woman tired of reporting for moral duty and a timid woman who fires her conscience are courageous marks in this feminine read. It is through this play of character and shared reflection that the author takes the reader deep into the female mystique, a place rarely visited. Clearly, the author’s ability to fling her heavy bag of morals over her shoulder to write this narrative is the true charm of her pages. Glancing into her book, it is her final reflection.

The Pink Forest is written in the language of emotion. The author's writing style is punctuated by curves of reality and tantalizing inner monologues showing the unbridgeable distance between herself and her conscience. Nowhere is this more concisely expressed than in the beauty of her intimate confessions. The sensuality of female enchantment is the magic potion of these pages but the state of existence beneath the appearance of this book is its mystical intrigue. The Pink Forest is more than a bundle of ferns. Enchantingly memorable, it is a beautiful mind oasis of unhurried thought. A book embelishing the delicacy of sentiment, The Pink Forest is a woman's best friend.

Dorfman is an author who gravitates to the signs of life. In tune to the emotions surrounding her, she insists she can still see the first star she wished upon. Dorfman was raised as an only child and has been writing since the age of four. She graduated from the University of Southern California and considers herself a “life writer” who is able to tap into the blush of the earth. “A woman doesn’t need pearls when she has The Pink Forest,” she winks.

Dorfman resides in Los Angeles with her mystical spirit.

The Pink Forest is available at www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com, www.atlasbooks.com, www.danadorfman.com and bookstores everywhere.

Audio Books

As we know since early times books were one of the main sources of knowledge. In many cases people told that one of their hobbies was a reading. But today the situation with reading is rather different. Many people are too busy both at work ands home and that’s why there is no enough time which can be dedicated to reading of interesting novel or  detective or adventure story or fantasy. This process takes a lot of time which we don’t have because it is necessary to do plenty of other things. But if you still want to read new literary works or old works which didn’t have the possibility to read in past, then let’s find some alternative. It becomes obvious that audio book is worthy alternative to traditional book.
Today audio books   become more and more popular because people realized all their advantages. Audio book can be used anywhere – while you are travelling, at work, at home, while you are walking, in general you can do something and at the same time to listen to interesting novel or detective of your favorite author. Such kind of books also enlarges your vocabulary with new words, word combinations and phrases.
You can purchase audio books at CD and DVD shops, music libraries, and big supermarkets. It is also possible to order audio books online. And there are even such websites where it is possible to download audio books free. Among the biggest online bookstores it is necessary to mention Audiobooks.org, Amazon.co.uk, and Audiobooks.net. You can listen to audio books by means of players, laptops, iPods etc.

Bomc2 Book Club Review

BOMC2 (formerly Zooba Book Club) is a novel, subscription-based book service, established on a concept which eliminates two main drawbacks of traditional book clubs: featured selections and high shipping charges. It works like this: you compile a list of books you'd like to read (your Reading List), and BOMC2 sends you the top book from that list each month and charges you a $9.95 monthly fee, which includes shipping and handling costs. Additional books you buy are also $9.95 in most cases (some select titles are $12.95) and are also shipped to you free of charge.

BOMC2 members can choose among 6500+ titles, mostly newer hardcover bestsellers spanning a wide range of genres. Fiction and non-fiction titles are equally well represented. Some popular authors include James Patterson, Danielle Steel, Nicholas Sparks, John Grisham, Nora Roberts, Sylvia Browne, Dean Koontz... just to name few.

The main benefit of BOMC2 membership are the savings, and they are accomplished in three ways: first, there's the $9.95 flat-rate pricing model. You save at least 35% off the majority of hardcover books compared to even the largest online retailers. Then there's free shipping: it applies to each and every order, you never have to worry about the book not being eligible for free shipping, or group your orders into bundles worth $25 or $50 or whatever. Finally, your first book (and you can choose a $130 encyclopedia if you like) is free of charge.

Important note: you will be charged $9.95 each month regardless of whether or not your Reading List is empty. You should have at least one book selection on it at least one day prior to shipping date, otherwise BOMC2 will not be able to ship you your book for that month. However, if such a situation occurs, you can still remedy it by putting a book on your list within the next 30 days – and it will be shipped to you immediately.

BOMC2 book club membership does not come without an obligation, but it’s small enough: once you accept your free introductory book, you will be required to stay a member for three more months or buy three more books at the regular $9.95 club price, with free shipping on each item. That brings your total minimum cost of membership to just $29.85.

Bottom line: if you are a book lover with an affinity for latest bestsellers, and if you are in the habit of buying at least one book a month (of course you are), then it is likely you won’t regret giving BOMC2 a try. Worst thing that can happen is, you wind up with four hardcover bestsellers for the price of one.

Fun With the Gospel of Bongo

Brent Robison

The High Priest of Prickly Bog by Hiram Blunt, BongoVista Publishing

For those of us who prefer the uncategorizable to the predictably pigeonholed, "The High Priest of Prickly Bog" is a treat. This light-hearted genre-bender lands somewhere near "speculative fiction" but its metafictional form and philosophical content send it spinning in a literary direction.

On one level, "High Priest..." is a comic romp through the lives of two men and a woman: a struggling writer with a manuscript, a self-doubt problem, and some rather unsavory friends; a time-hopping, angel-chosen, investor-turned-prophet who suffers in the glare of religious celebrity; and the pragmatic country girl who unwillingly falls for the real man behind the media image. On another, much more grand, level, it is a treatise aimed at curing the spiritual malaise of our age.

The book opens with a free-wheeling splash of metaphysics: the story of the creation of the world by the Great God Bongo. Then it sets the stage with a jump from the distant past to the "future:" the awfully familiar land of Bongovia, where the ruling church has "literalized" the original free-thought gospel of Bongo into a state-enforced religion of conformity. We are swept away on a surprisingly convoluted journey through the conundrums of time-travel, the vicissitudes of celebrity, the travails of the writing life, the slippery nature of angels and friends, plus more. By the end, we realize we are witnessing the dawn of a revolution in Bongovia.

"What am I?" the congregation chants somewhere near the middle of the story, and the High Priest of the Intergalactic Temple of the Great God Bongo answers, "You are what you are... what you have always been... what you will always be." Hiram Blunt, the ostensible author of "High Priest...," clearly enjoys swimming in the deep waters of age-old esoteric thought. And for all his tongue-in-cheekiness, he has some powerful words of wisdom to impart. Perhaps that is to be expected from an author who dictated his novel from beyond the grave (an astonishing claim made on the back cover by channeler and "typist," Mario Vickram Sen).

For the most part, however, Blunt keeps those heady spiritual currents where they belong, buried just under the surface. Plot, character, and narrative voice pull us along easily. One of the pleasures of fiction is voice: that quirky persona a talented author adopts to narrate his tale. Here, Blunt exhibits a natural flair for language that sounds like your well-read jokester buddy confidently spinning a "what-if" yarn, stirring in a little wordplay, a pinch of sly wit, some wacky action, a dash of self-consciously purple prose, a hefty helping of incisive social parody, and a bold assumption of the truth of his own liberal philosophy.

Also, this book's narrative tricks keep good company. Like Paul Auster's "Oracle Night" or "Leviathan," "The High Priest of Prickly Bog" bears the same title as the novel written by one of its characters. Like Milan Kundera's "The Book of Laughter and Forgetting," it occasionally inserts a first-person narrative "I," without explanation, into an omniscient third-person point of view, and straightforwardly acknowledges its story and its characters as fictional creations. Like Yann Martel's "Life of Pi," it's a high-key whopper of an adventure story, constantly underpinned by the universal reach for God.

"The High Priest of Prickly Bog" is a very entertaining read, smart and funny, but more than that -- the kind of entertainment that works on several levels at once, to make you both smile and think. At its final page, you're glad to make the discovery that... hey, maybe there'll be a sequel!

The book is available through Lulu and Amazon. For more information, go to greatgodbongo.com.

Faith, Prayer and Toil:

The Ultimate Process In Dealing With Difficult Situation

I was a former Consular Investigator of the U.S. Embassy in Manila who worked with the Anti-Fraud Unit for more than a decade, until such time that I met an awful vehicular accident that resulted to my separation from the service. The mishap happened when I and my driver-colleague, Homer, were traveling back home to Manila after completing our background investigations in the far away province of Camarines Norte in Bicol region. While running in a moderate speed along the winding road of Maharlika Hi-way within the vicinity of Barangay Tigbinan, the vehicle suddenly went out of control and skidded right down the approximately 50 to 60-foot deep ravine. I was not sure whether I was scared in the face of my imminent death, but I supposed it was just a shocking reaction that I did nothing but to shut my eyes in terror, tensed all my muscles in anticipation of my broken cadaver, and for a split second, flashed back the memory of my good old days with my beloved family, while the vehicle was rapidly flying into the air and down the bed of the narrow valley.

Thank God I was alive!... I mean, my driver and I were both alive, with only simple bruises and no broken bones. Perhaps it’s because of the safety belts we wore at that time, and perhaps because the narrow valley bed to where the vehicle tripped up right-side down, was soft enough to bear the impact of the crash.

But that was a mere continuation of our misfortune. The embassy charged us of several violations in connection with that accident; one of which was the so-called “reckless driving resulting to damage to vehicle” (“U.S. Embassy Handbook for Filipino Employees” 17). This was done so despite the fact that I was not the one driving the vehicle. The grievance committee panel argued that I ranked senior in the trip and therefore, responsible for maintenance and protection of the official car. Despite my two Meritorious Honor Awards, several official recognitions for my loyalty to the interest of the diplomatic mission, and Public Attorney’s supported appeal for reconsideration, I finally found myself being terminated from the service for cause (“Notice of Termination” 1992).

Probably I could have done wrong somehow, but my spirit denied acceptance of any guilt. All I knew was that I enjoyed working with the embassy, with beautiful people around me and all those challenging assignments that I love so much, that’s why I did my job very well, and I did it with all my heart, my life and my soul, for my own glory and for the interest of the service. But such redundant car accident totally erased my dreams, suddenly refrained myself to keep on going, and most of all, severely affecting the future of my children. Homer, my colleague, probably in total desperation, got sick and subsequently met his untimely death. But I was still fighting back. I’ve always wanted to keep alive. I didn’t want to be completely discouraged by this emotional trial and finally say farewell to the world in such a younger age of 40’s, while leaving my bereaved family in future uncertainty. If we succumb to poverty, so be it! We shall be joined together in good times and bad times.

And bad times did occur. Our imminent economic shortage was compounded by ailment of my two younger kids. Still fresh from being separated from the service, my two-year-old child, Maybel, and my eight-year-old son, Bimbo, suffered serious Dengue fever and

both were rushed to the nearby hospital at the wee hour of the night. The kids suffered a lot of pain. Each had a plastic small pipe inserted into their noses so as to flow out rotten dirt that looked like black decomposing human particles coming from their stomach - aside from several hoses of dextrose injected into different part of their skin. The worst, the kids were not allowed to take any food or liquid and this punishment went on for several days. Maybel whom I loved the most, was despondently wondering over my refusal to give her something to eat despite her repeated clamor for food.

My heart was melting! It was the most challenging moment in my life. Both kids were in 50-50 condition and I was not so sure whether I could bear acceptance that they might finally be leaving us for good.

In my state of hopelessness, I appealed to the Lord harder and ever and without let-up, to spare my kids from the toil of death and to send them hasty recovery instead. Then I suddenly felt a strange spirit that crept into mine, more burning than the spirit of brandy that I consumed awhile ago to reinforce my emotional strength. It was a splendid feeling I’ve never felt before. And as I rushed back to the hospital, I found my children in peaceful condition, my wife had refrained from crying, and the doctors and nurses were at their normal faces.

The children were recuperating fast! God did not totally forsake us! He still had a gracious heart for us to be heard of and for us to ask for forgiveness. Amen.

What process could be better than seeking the convivial arms of the Divine Providence at times of trouble and at times when one had sorted to all recourses but they didn’t seem to work at all? Anything beyond the capability of man should be consigned into the custody of the Lord. As Jesus said, “Come to Me all you who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

There are a lot of massive epic fantasy series out there. And many of them are simply great. They introduce us to complex and rich new worlds. And the experience we have with them can itself last for years because each series has multiple novels and some are still being added to. Here are the top five.

The Shannara series by Terry Brooks - There are currently twenty books in the Shannara series and they are roughly broken down into trilogies. It all began in 1977 with the release of the first book The Sword of Shannara. This series of books is often heralded as the rightful heir to the Lord of the Rings. I have to agree :) I read the first book when it came out and fell in love with the series. The books all take place in Shannara but cover a lot of time and a lot of different characters. If you are considering an adventure into Shannara you should start with the first book of the first trilogy The Sword of Shannara. The second book is The Elfstones of Shannara which is currently being made into a major motion picture. The third book of the trilogy is The Wishsong of Shannara.

The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan - This is a series of books that currently number eleven. The twelfth and final book is scheduled to be out in the Fall of 2009 and Robert Jordan passed away while working on it but he had done extensive interviews and work with Brandon Sanderson who will complete it for him. It's a wonderful series of books and is extremely large! The page count of each book goes anywhere from 700 to 1100 pages. I personally devoured the first five books in the series one right after the other. After reading the first I ordered the second and so on right through the first five. Well written and very complex. Nice stuff but does get some criticism for tending to keep you hanging all the time (and for its massive page count). I would say this series is a bit more serious than the Shannara series. The First book is The Wheel of Time and the Second Book is The Great Hunt.

The Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind - The first book in this series is Wizards First Rule. I have read the first three books in this series and thoroughly enjoyed them. I will get to the others eventually. The Very first book is just phenomenal. It was released in 1994 to much critical acclaim. You may want to get the box set of the first three novels. You are going to burn through the first one pretty quick. The Sword of Truth Books 1-3: Wizard's First Rule, Blood of the Fold, Stone of Tears are all masterfully crafted books.

The Chronicles Of Thomas Covenant The Unbeliever – There are currently eight books in this series and the first book is being made into a major motion picture. - Of all the series I have read this is my absolute favorite. I have read through the whole series twice. This world stands apart from the others for a couple of reasons. True it is a fantasy work with all the usual things like magic, wizards, big battles and well you know. But it is also very sharply balanced by a peculiar main character - Covenant. He is a leper and a bit of an anti-hero. For a portion of the story he doesn't believe what is happening and he doesn't want to be the hero. There is a very strong internal conflict in him and it goes nicely with the external conflict. The first book Lord Foul's Bane was released in 1977 The most recent book in the series is Fatal Revenant and it was released in October of 2007 so this is a nice current series with another book coming.

A Song of Ice and Fire Series by George R.R. Martin - This is a series of currently four books and the first book A Game of Thrones was published in 1996. There are three more books planned for the series and several prequel novellas. The fifth book in the series (A Dance with Dragons) is scheduled to be released in Sep 2008. This series of books is more contemporary than the other series; it was started in 1996 and it tends to have much more of a Medieval Europe flavor to it. Political intrigue and the maneuverings between various factions play a big part in the story.

There are lots of great epic fantasy sagas that span many pages and many volumes. If you want to stick with something that is tried and true then any of these five would make a great choice. No matter which one you choose you are in for many hours of wonderful adventuring in strange and new fantasy worlds.

Some Classics

A Wrinkle in Time - (Newberry Medal Winner) This is simply a beautiful book that has blazed a trail in modern children’s fantasy by putting forward a story of several children embarking on a grand adventure; In this case to rescue their father. There is some fascinating and thoughtful stuff in this book like living stars and tesseracts. It is a perennial favorite and on every librarian’s list.

A Wizard of Earthsea – Written by Ursula K. Leguin this is the first book in a series called The EarthSea series. Short and light but extraordinarily beautiful. This first book in the series follows a young boy named Ged as he goes from being a simple goat herd to a powerful wizard.  It is simply beautiful and it brings forth some wonderful and magical themes such as the concept that everything (including dragons) has a secret name.  And if you know the secret name you can control the thing (including dragons).

The Hobbit - This probably shouldn’t be on this list but it is so good that I can’t leave it off.  With the absolute enormous success of the Lord of the Rings movies this book may be overlooked but I consider it better!  It is also in the works to be a movie.

Five Children and it – This is one of the most popular books written by Edith Nesbit who is often credited with creating the whole genre of children embarking on fantasy adventures.  Her books are in the public domain now and can easily be found for free. The theme of this book is:  Be careful what you ask for. You may get it! That's the message in this delightful tale of five youngsters who discover a bizarre sand creature that grants wishes. There's a catch, of course: the wishes come undone at sunset, and worse yet, things often get out of hand!

Dragonflight – This book is a little more complex than earlier ones I have cited here and it tends toward being more of a novel for grownups but it very suitable for teens.  We are introduced to a complex world of dragons through the main character Lessa. This book is often credited with being the book that has launched many a young girls writing career.  It is the first book in a trilogy of books called The Dragon riders of Pern series.

A Princess of Mars: The first novel in the Edgar Rice Burroughs series and currently in the initial stages of being written into a movie or animation that will be made by Pixar.  This is the first book in a series called John Carter of Mars and it is good rollicking fun in the tradition of the old pulp magazines.  It is a favorite for young boys who like sword fighting big monsters.

Contemporary fantasy and fiction

When it comes to modern fantasy fiction for teens there is an enormous selection to choose from and that, in itself,  could be an obstacle. Here are summaries of some of the more popular ones and I have also picked some that are currently slated to be made into a movie.

Artemis Fowl Series – This series of books takes a little bit of an unusual position as far as children’s books go because Artemis Fowl himself is a twelve year old genius and a criminal mastermind. The author of these books calls them Die Hard with Fairies! And the books are often characterized as being a high-octane and rip-roaring ride.  It is a wildly popular series of books with a big website and even a wiki. There are currently five books in the series with the first being simply titled Artemis Fowl. The sixth book “The Time Paradox” is set to be released in July of 2008.

Here, there be Dragons – The title itself is rather mysterious and harkens back to another time. This was the phrase that cartographers used to write in patches of ocean that were unexplored.  The basic premise of this story will really resonate with teens that are fans of fantasy itself because it starts with the unusual meeting of three young strangers John, Jack, and Charles on a rainy night in London. We later find out these three young men are J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Charles Williams.

The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches - This is a series of books that takes place in a world of magic and secrets called Ruin Mist. This book was slow to start but word of mouth turned it into a best seller. It is one of those relatively little known books and series that is very satisfying.

Septimus Heap – If magic and wizards are of strong appeal this series of books make a great alternative to Harry Potter. The Main character (Septimus) is the seventh son of a seventh son and the main line of the story follows two children switched at birth: a boy destined to be a wizard and a girl destined to be a princess.  There are currently four books in the series and the first book has been picked up by Warner Brothers and is currently being made into a movie that is scheduled for release in 2010.

Any of these books or series will launch teens and young adults on a remarkable adventure into strange fantasy worlds and no joystick or keyboard is required.

Her Shadowed Heart by Anne Whitfield

Mirella Patzer

In Yorkshire England in the year 1864, Anna Thornton is the eldest child of wealthy parents. She is wildly independent, empathetic and kind to the servants, and much beloved by all – except for her own mother. Anna does not understand why her mother is so cold and indifferent towards her. Anna believes her mother hates her.

Matt Cowan is a man of means who owns and operates rich mines in South America. The instant they meet, both are inexplicably drawn to each other. Because Anna’s mother does not approve of the dashing Matt Cowan, Anna and Matt begin to meet in secret. Before long, their trysts cause a strong attraction to blossom. Soon, they find themselves deeply in love with each other.

Matt must return to South America to tend to his business and mines. He proposes marriage to Anna, but wishes to wed when he returns from abroad in two years. Anna, however, wishes to wed immediately and travel to South America with him. Matt refuses, citing the land is too wild. They reach an impasse where the only solution is to part ways.

After a heart-wrenching day of lovemaking, Anna and Matt separate. Anna is devastated and falls into the depths of despair. When she discovers she is carrying Matt’s child, her mother banishes her from the family home. Anna finally learns the terrible secret which is the cause of her mother’s bitter aloofness towards her.
With all her possessions, her trusted maidservant, and a broken heart, Anna turns her back on her family and home, determined to start a new life. Before long, she acquires a dilapidated farm in Yorkshire and gathers a bevy of helpers she has either come upon accidentally or rescued from some mishap. A handsome, penniless, Irish laborer seeking work is added to the small makeshift family. The gratitude of those she aided turns into fierce loyalty and together, the small group begins to rebuild the farm and make it profitable.

Life is not easy, however, and Anna must surmount numerous misfortunes that test her resolve. Soon, Anna finds herself attracted to the hard-working Irishman – something she deeply resents because of the pain of her severed romance with Matt Cowan and his lies. She fights her attraction to him. Just as her life begins to turn around, however, secrets from the past come to the forefront and threaten to destroy everything she has built.

From start to finish, Anne Whitfield draws the reader intensely into this well written, hard-luck tale. The primary and secondary characters are colorfully realistic. They draw on the reader’s emotions and their memory will linger long after the book is finished. I have read several of Anne Whitfield’s novels and they are all of exceptional quality and very well written. There is no doubt she is a talented writer and one to continue to watch in the future. This is a wonderful tale about the power of one woman to overcome the hardships of life. I highly recommend it.

Between curruption and falsehood--Greatest threath to quality of life

Human is created to be free through finding knowledge of the truth of life and certainty. God has created the universe on the basis of love and has demanded of the people to they should build our life in the foundation of truth, to make truth and straight dealing a practice of our life., and to give truth a place in our talking and dealing .When a society lost sight in this sense, hardship will be generated.

There is no difference between falsehood and corruption, most trouble land today, gets all the trouble because of lack of truth leading to widespread corruption. Being corrupt is being liar, a false teller, it is the great evil, and that comes with punishment a society cannot avoid, in corruption you can get everything – but only for short time, it will never last and the end of is definitely bad, if we the corrupt person don’t get the repercussion, his or her loves will get it – this is real – the law of karma is real and it work quite well here. There is absolutely no excuse for those who make lying their habit and who for the whole of their life go on deceiving people by their falsehood—I tell then end really justify the mean. How we end everything, mater and depends what we do now.

characteritcs of liars and currupt people

Falsehood is evil that encloses the internal and wickedness of the liar, it involve wrong dealing that act as spreading evil that even without forcing inclinations ,

it lead people to commit gracious sins. It is like a disease which requires a very long drawn treatment Corrupt people are like fright and cowardice which always hinder the progress of a coward and frightened human. They are like greed which make human misery and stingy. Corrupt people are prey of their fear and doubts when it comes to giving hand of friendship
Deficiency and weakness of quality of life of false associated with falsehood mostly enter peoples nature when they are being called upon to do their duty. No matter what the extent of lying is and its widespread make responsible for what happened after it. If we remember we are on mission that is to say we have to report to somebody one day .journalist who write to disguise the people by false news , politician , leaders who misrepresent important public problems, and slave of selfishness who cast aspersions against eminent people of goodwill are committing a terrible crime—because millions will suffer every head suffer because of one person or group of person will go after them- can you image what the end of these enumerated people can be .

In order to build thrust you need to be honest:

Ø Honest and open with people and able to be counted upon to do what you say

Ø Ready to share praise and sense of achievement

Ø Able to see other people point of view and respond to them

Ø Willing to take responsibility

Ø Skilled at listening

Ø Prepare to thrust others

Adapted from stay confidence by John Caunt, Koga page limited London

In addition to this, it is important for us to learn; through learning it will be easy for us to make good judgment, we should be careful about following falsified stories, the story has no fault for telling his stories,,, certainty and reality of the stories is bound on us to decide on and make our judgment – it is judgment we make that determine if we are real human – I mean judgment based on truth, conscience, judgment, misleading without bias judgment that leave us with no doubt. falsehood accusation either in the form of breaking promise,, false itself is a big evil , every time we tell one ,our though get destabilized , ., not only that we loose respect and honor.

Another purpose of our being is raising beautiful kids, that will be truthful, because they will lake a new generation, and if generation is bad, the continuity of human existence can end. We must sow in the hearth of the children the seeds of gratefulness and importance of truth so that they may grow up and develop on truth, and give it place in their talk.

Lies can go for many days, but there is no doubt hat truth has its day - Further to this before I drop my pen on this issue, we should be careful in our daily dealing on the following:

Ø Telling lies in joke

Ø Avoid exaggeration in praise

Ø Avoid breaking promise

Ø Truthfulness in our speech

Ø Avoid falsehood and deception in trades

Passport to Heaven

Fred Watson

Sarah smiled to herself as she filled the plastic tubs with the thick paste; Mohamed will be pleased she thought, as she clicked the lids firmly into place and carried them over to the bed. The rest of the ingredients had been double-wrapped in plastic and carefully placed amongst the clothing in her case. Now all she had to do was wrap the tubs, place them inside and make sure they were well padded against the knocks of the baggage handlers. Finally satisfied that all was secure, she zipped the case shut and closed the padlock.

Carrying the case into the hall she placed it near the door ready for when the taxi arrived and for the tenth time that morning checked that she had her ticket and passport. Glancing at her watch she realised she still had fifteen minutes to wait. Flipping open her laptop she checked her mail; two new messages, one from her mum wishing her Bon Voyage and the other from Mohamed asking if all was well and letting her know that his friend Abdul would pick her up from Al Tet airport. She typed a quick reply, ‘Everything OK, see you soon, Sarah.’

She was looking forward to seeing Mohamed again. Who was she kidding; she was dying to see him again. It had been two years now since he had gone back home from Newcastle University and she hadn’t realised how much she had missed him, until he had contacted her by email two months ago. For two of the three years he had been in England they had been an item, she a peaches and cream English rose and he her dark skinned, dark haired, French Moroccan lover.

They had been lovers but it had been a fiery romance. She was a feisty independent girl into politics and he, despite his looks and charm, had a touch of the superior Moroccan male about him. They would argue for days on end, spitting and fighting like cat and dog, mainly about politics and then spend a fantastic few days making up, before something would start them off again.

At the end of term his father had ordered him to come back to Rabat. He had kissed her goodbye, promised to keep in touch and she hadn’t seen our heard from him until the email two months ago. Two weeks after the email he rang her from Santa Pola on the Costa Blanca. He had moved to Spain the year before, set up in business and he asked her to come out for a holiday. Maybe she shouldn’t have agreed, but the sound of his ‘come to bed’ French accent had awakened old feelings and besides, in exchange for the ingredients that she was delivering, he had promised her a passport to heaven.

Sarah nodded off and only awoke as the plane thumped down and raced along the runway with the reverse thrust of the engines screaming. Thank God she had been asleep she hated landings. She didn’t like takeoffs either, but landing were the worst. Her overactive imagination, always painted pictures of flames and explosions as they ploughed into the unforgiving concrete.

Three quarters of an hour after touch down as she pushed her way through the crowd at arrivals, she spotted Abdul, he was small and older than she expected, but she recognised him by the piece of cardboard he held with her name on.

‘I’m Sarah. Do you speak English?’ she asked, desperately trying to remember a few words of Moroccan from the past. None came, at least, none that were suitable beyond the bedroom.

He gave her a gap toothed grin, shrugged his shoulders and motioning her to follow led her to an old beat up Seat Ibiza. Fifteen minutes later when they pulled up outside the hotel Miramar, Abdul gave her a note from Mohamed and left her to carry her own case inside.

Later in the room she read the note, ‘Sorry, I have some business I must attend to, but I’ll pick you up at eight. Love Mohamed.’

By seven forty five she had unpacked her case, showered, changed and packed the ingredients into the small holdall she’d carried as hand luggage. Filled with excitement and too impatient to wait, she made her way down to the lobby. Mohamed arrived at eight and drove her to an apartment, filled with the aroma of Moroccan spices and while he fussed about at the stove, she unpacked the holdall and prepared what he had missed most from his time in Newcastle stotty cake sandwiches, filled with ham and pease pudding. In exchange Mohamed served her favourite dish, Moroccan Lamb, a true Passport to Heaven.

Eighteenth century Venice is an era of decadence and sin, intrigue and corruption, illicit romance and dark secrets. Carnivale and the wearing of opulent masks make hiding while in public easy. Trysts and illicit encounters abound. Danger and violence lurk around any chosen corner. Under this magnificent and glamorous backdrop, the lives of three young girls, Adrianna, Elena, and Marietta, intertwine at the “Ospedale della Pieta” a renowned music conservatory for orphaned girls.

Adrianna, the most famous and most highly revered singer of the Pieta gives up the opportunity for a sensational career in the opera to marry a talented Venetian mask- maker whom she has fallen deeply in love with.

The beautiful blonde and blue-eyed Elena catches the attention of Marco and Fillipo Celano, two brothers from a very rich and powerful family. She is in love with and betrothed to Marco, but when he suddenly dies before their wedding, she must become the wife of his brother, Filipo, a man who is ambitious as well as dangerous. To maintain his lofty position within the Celano family, Filipo must sire an heir, but Elena remains barren. The more desperate he becomes for an heir, the more he turns to violence towards the gentle Elena.

The rich voice and beauty catapults Marietta into top spot at the Pieta. She becomes one of the most famed singers of Venice. Her notoriety draws the notice and love of a handsome Frenchman named Alix Desgrange. Their plans to elope are ruined when Alix’s guardian learns of the tryst. The two lovers are forever separated when Alix must marry someone else in his homeland of France.
Several years pass. Marietta receives a marriage proposal from Domenico Torrisi. The Torrisi and Celano families have been mortal enemies for many years. Once she marries into the Torrisi family, she will never be allowed to see Elena again. Both husbands forbid the two women to maintain their friendship. With the aid of Adrianna, Elena and Marietta begin to meet discreetly. Their friendship continues under these clandestine conditions. Further, they develop a repertoire of secret hand and eye signals to communicate with each other whenever in public.

Clandestine meetings, secret births, murder, vengeance, vendetta, betrayal, and political intrigue decorate this intricate plot. I was easily drawn into the story as the simplicity and joy of life for the three “Pieta” girls deteriorate.

Rosalind Laker vividly recreates the mystique of the “golden age” of Venice where sin can hide behind the mask of the wearer. She has wonderfully portrayed the decadence of Venice. The reader will be swept away on a heart-wrenching journey of violence, trickery, and dark secrets. The story’s realistic sub-plots of hatred and obsession draw the reader deeper into the tale. The rich decadence of Venetian life of centuries past, unforgettable characters, and the roller-coaster of twists and turns sprinkled throughout the story, make this an unforgettable novel. The stories of the three girls and the hardships they must overcome is endearing. The ending does not disappoint. I recommend this unique novel for anyone who wants to vividly experience the rich culture of the ancient city of Venice.
